Being heavily into fitness anything health related shows up at my door step. People have been trying to sell me on this essential oil kick for years. Back when I worked in the nightclub I was working EDC in 112 degree heat. My coworker put Doterra peppermint on my back to cool my body down. Surprisingly it worked really good. However, that wasn’t enough to get me to purchase these oils. Pain changes things. The past 2 years I have experienced gut issues. Taken multiple drugs to combat severe bloating, constipation, stomach spasms, and more. In which none of those drugs have worked.
Test after test, no help or relief. I asked my gastroenterologist, “What can I take to help my stomach that is not a drug. “Ingestible peppermint essential oil”, he said. Suddenly I became in shock! My mind began to race with a million thoughts and questions.“What was it replacing? What was this going to help? Why did you prescribe me drugs!” Apparently this magical oil was not only going to replace my Ranitidine which took care of my muscle spasms in the stomach but also was going to help with any constipation. (I will write another blog on medications I was once given and oils, herbs, spices and food that replaced them).
Many of us do not understand what essential oils are and what they really do. The old me thought you put it in a diffuser and they made the house smell pretty. I also thought it was a scam. Since essential oils are the new topic lately many companies are producing these oils in rapid speed. Falsely advertising benefits their oils have due to chemicals and bad processing. These oils are not regulated by the FDA. It makes it hard when shopping for essential oils.
An essential oil is extracted from a plant using distillation or other ways similar to cold pressing. Real essential oils do not use chemicals to process the extraction. Ingestible essential oils or in this companies case spirits are made from just diluting the essential oil in alcohol. This is the first company I used and currently still am. They make their spirits with a tincture of the herb so that it represents the plant material more.
Essential oil companies say do not ingest because it is not FDA regulated and can be dangerous. It is those same companies that do not provide where their products are sourced from. About 8 months ago I started using Doterra because they are CPTG Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade. The CPTG process certifies that there are no added fillers, synthetic ingredients, or harmful contaminants in their essential oils that would reduce their efficacy. DoTerra also does additional tests to make sure each batch is perfect. If you are unsure they go a step further and give you each batches report.
If you know me I am a huge fan of an organic label mainly because of glyphosate. The process of essential oils are made from a number of growers and distillers around the world. Each location has its own specific laws and rules governing agriculture and collecting wild crafted botanicals. Doterra uses GC/MS analysis process which determines if any chemical residue exists in the essential oil, such as pesticides, herbicides, extenders, and solvents. Looking for plant materials that are grown in specific environments. This is why Doterra essential oils do not say organic due to the regulations in each country. In my opinion they go above the organic label. These methods ensure our safety much more.
In my past blogs I talked a little about my health and my current situation. If you read my previous blogs or follow me on social media you know I purged my house full of toxic chemicals. Doing so I began to make my own household products. I make everything from hand soap, dish soap, laundry detergent, all purpose cleaner, and even glass cleaner. Each concoction is different but similar. The base of my ingredients comes from Branch Basics. The rest come from my essential oils.
I use three essential oils to create my soaps and cleaners. Theses three are On Guard, Lemon, and Lavender. On Guard helps to support the immune system and it helps kill off harmful bacteria and viruses. It contains a blend of five essential oils, wild orange peel, clove bud, cinnamon bark/leaf, eucalyptus leaf, and rosemary leaf/flower. Lemon has a clean citrus aroma, known for its purifying properties. Lavender has a calming floral smell. Often used for relaxation. It is great for the skin by calming any irritation from burns to allergies. Each essential oil has an array of benefits.
Above I talked about the power of peppermint. I been using peppermint essential oil for about 2 years. Calming my stomach spasms and releasing me from using Ranitidine completely. Herb Pharm is the company I used. I would place a whole droplet in a 8 ounce cup of water. I did this for several months. Currently I use half a droplet in my tea every night before bed. I am now a believer of the essential oil power.
Peppermint is one of my favorite essential oils. Peppermint has a cooling feel. I place peppermint on the heels of my daughters feet when she has a fever. Allowing the body to cool itself naturally and fight off the fever. When using essential oil on children break down the potency with fractionated coconut oil. Doterra already does this for you in their Touch collection.
How many of you use vapor rub? I hate not being able to breathe from all the mucus build up in the body. Vapor rub was my go to with all my respiratory and lymphatic problems. A few months ago I decide to switch out my vapor rub for Breathe by Doterra. Best thing I ever did and it works way better. Breathe has a mixture of Laurel Leaf, Eucalyptus Leaf, Peppermint Plant, Melaleuca Leaf, Lemon Peel, Cardamom Seed, Ravintsara Leaf, and Ravensara Leaf essential oils.
The moment my throat becomes sore or I begin to cough I place Frankincense under my tongue. Usually when I become sick it stays for a while. Doing this cures me radpidly. Frankincense is often called the “king of oils.” It helps with cellular function, supports the immune and nervous system, and has a variety of benefits to assist your body back to health.
Lavender is a beast of an essential oil. Mainly used for its calming ability. A go to herb that helps with anxiety, and stress. My two favorite benefits lavender has is anti-inflammatory and antihistamine. I have severe allergy problems and some of my allergic reactions create hives all over my body for multiple days. Lavender helps with the itchy feeling, and the burning. My skin burns when I am in the sun too long. I rub a little lavender on my burn and the pain goes away and it heals my burn quickly. Each day I discover a new love for a different essential oil.
Doterra currently has 37 essential oils you can use internally. Providing ways to incorporate them in your everyday life. You can use them to help with medicinal purposes or even use them in your cooking.
Cooking and baking brings me so much joy. I never even thought I could cook with essential oils. My recent motto is “Food is Medicine.” Using essential oils in certain dishes I create are helping my body heal naturally. Try this Lemon Lavender Granita I made for the intense summer heat.
2 cups filtered water
1/2 cup local honey
3-4 drops lemon essential oil
1 drop lavender essential oil
Whisk the filtered water and local honey in a medium saucepan over medium heat just until the honey dissolves. Pour the honey mixture into a 13 by 9 by 2-inch glass baking dish. Cool completely. Whisk in the lemon and lavender essential oil. Freeze until the granita becomes slushy, about 2 hours. Using a fork, stir to blend. Continue freezing the granita until frozen. Stirring every hour to form crystals, at least 5 hours or overnight.
