When your child gets sick it’s scary and we have been trained to PANIC. Since I have PTSD from chronic sinus infections, upper respiratory problems and getting sick when someone even sneezes near me, panic happens to be my middle name. However, as time progresses I see my own immune system becoming stronger. Stronger because I absolutely deny to put poison in my body. It feels almost everything on the market is laced with processed chemicals and sugar. Especially cough suppressant!
Bella got this annoying cough and my elderberry syrup wasn’t cutting the instant relief. I needed to back it up with something else. It was time to make some holistic cough suppressant. To make this magically syrup I used only 3 ingredients flaxseed gel, lemon and honey.
Flax or linseed is a mucilage which can be used as artificial mucus. A popular use of flaxseed gel is for hair. It can help seal the cuticle preventing breakage and frizz to help it grow. Another use of the gel is an egg replacement helping ingredients bind together. Some people use it as a face moisturizer or in my case to help coat the throat. Lemons are great for soar throats because they break up mucus and provide pain relief. Honey acts as a cough suppressant and has been demonstrated to have antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal and anti-inflammatory properties.
Whole flaxseeds are recommended to eat grounded because they are very hard to digest and can pass through your digestive system untouched leaving you with no benefits. Flax seeds also take up water. Very similar to chia seeds they are able to absorb 10 times their volume in water. Which can cause them to get stuck inside or cause a lot of discomfort.
Boil 3 tablespoons of flaxseeds in 1 cup of filtered water. Wait until it starts to form a good mucus trail. When it does turn the heat off and let it sit and cool for 10-15 minutes. This helps thicken it up a little more but not too much where it ends up in clumps. Don’t worry if it is too thick just add a little more water. Then take cheese cloth and strain the gel out into a bowl leaving the seeds in the cloth. Add 3 tablespoons of each lemon and honey. Mix and voila.
Now babies under 1 year of age cannot consume honey because it may contain spores of bacteria that can cause botulism. You can switch it out for agave or don’t use it at all. Agave has no proven benefits to suppress a cough. It is just being used to sweeten it up. Filtered water is extremely important. I use a Berkey because it cleans the water like no other. Reducing pollutants, heavy metals like lead from old water pipes, pesticide runoff, byproducts of chemicals, and FLUORIDE. Fluoride can kill the good bacteria inhibiting your healing process.
When I started this holistic journey I was scared. Scared that it wouldn’t be enough that I needed more to heal. Like some of us who embark on the holistic lifestyle it is mainly because it was all we had left. Years before I was diagnosed with Lyme Disease I was a poking pig for Western Medicine. Antibiotics after antibiotics, tests after tests, and still no healing or relief. I was getting sicker by the day. Then I said enough is enough.
Please don’t read this and think I hate Western Medicine. I personally feel everything has its own place but I don’t feel conventional medicine is good unless their is an emergency.
Conventional medicine left me feeling alone and vulnerable like I was pushed off a cliff with no one to help me. Left only me to help me. I needed to climb back up that cliff and stand tall. When you are in the dark it is hard to see the light. Keeping focus that the light exists is the only thing that can help you through. That focus led me here and now I am stronger than ever. Learning and strengthening myself daily. Teaching everything I learned and sharing my experiences with all of you because I want someone to read this and know there is HOPE.
